Italy Student Visa Guidance
An Italian study visa is refused far more often for a weak file than for a weak candidate. The requirements are knowable and the interview is predictable — what catches people out is sequencing, because pre-enrolment, legalisation, accommodation proof and the VFS slot all depend on each other.

- Universitaly pre-enrolment. Your admission is registered on the national portal and routed to the Italian consulate covering your jurisdiction. Nothing else can proceed until this is done correctly.
- Legalisation. Academic documents through HRD and MEA apostille, plus a Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement. This is the slowest stage — allow months, not weeks.
- Financial proof. Evidence of sufficient funds for the year, whether from family income, a loan sanction, or a confirmed scholarship.
- Insurance and accommodation. Health cover valid in Italy, and evidence of where you will live on arrival.
- VFS appointment. Slots are limited in peak season and fill quickly. Book as soon as pre-enrolment allows.
- Interview. Usually brief, and focused on whether your course choice, funding and plans hang together.
What the interview is really assessing
Consular officers are testing three things: that you can explain why this course at this university, that the money is real and traceable, and that your intentions are genuinely academic. Rehearsed answers perform badly. Candidates who can talk naturally about their course, their city and their funding perform well, even with imperfect English.
The most common avoidable failure is a mismatch between documents and answers — a funding figure that does not match the bank statement, or a course description that does not match the offer letter. Our mock interviews exist mainly to surface those contradictions before the consulate does.
